Teenagers love their parents and want them to be happy. Similarly, old people love their children and want them to be happy.
They show their feelings by being incredibly difficult to get along with.
Teenagers and old people both know that they will not be with their family forever and they know their family members will miss them terribly when they are gone. Being difficult is their way to reduce the eventual pain for their loved ones. Their families will see their going on as a mixed blessing.
Being difficult is an act of love. Appreciate it.
