Want or Need?

This is a useful article by one of my LinkedIn connections, Maria Christina Hinton Nizic.  “How to feel abundant when you are broke as shit”  A useful skill to call up on demand, wouldn’t you say.

I have learned that few people actually click through on links.  Please make an exception this time.  If you cannot do that, the advice points are:

  • Broke feels yucky.
  • Not having money in the bank shouldn’t define you.
  • First off, why are you broke?
  • Everyone should have an emergency fund
  • An emergency fund is for a need
  • A want is totally different
  • You want to cry
  • You need (not want) an adjustment in attitude.

I cannot summarize the technique for success well enough, so I will quote it completely.

Get out your journal and a pen. Write down 5 people who love you. They can be family, best friends, whomever. Okay, got that? Now write down five things you see that are beautiful. It can be the cat, the picture of your grandparents, your favorite book, whatever you can see. These are things you think are beautiful. Now write down five things you are thankful for. It can be your job, your landlord who fixed your faucet, air conditioning, anything you are thankful for.

Now stop and read your list aloud. Five people love you, they truly do. Now read the five beautiful things you see in your apartment. Great now the five things you are thankful for, a faucet and clean water. Now think of all you truly have. Not so broke after all.

There is abundance in each of our lives and gratitude is the foundation of all the virtues.  It is not hard to be grateful, you just need to take a little time each day or week or hour to notice what you have.  We are all rich and we will be better people if we notice.  Money is just a limit.

  1. Don, what great ideas Maria has. I would say that her practice of writing down five people who love you, five beautiful things that you can readily observe, and five things to be thankful for would give anyone a boost. As I started doing it I observed that I could do five without even thinking. It also has occurred to me that this works for being down about almost anything. ha ha of course you must be thinking. Thanks for sharing the Maria wisdom.
