Sometimes Small Pieces Are All You Need
Scott Adams talks about talent stacks and how accumulation of skills in many areas helps you achieve your goals. You need not be an expert at any of them, but competent helps you. He points to President Trump as someone with a wide talent stack with several deep skills.
Narrow and deep talent stacks are where specialist live. Shallower and wider stacks are where generalists live. You will notice generalists tend to be better communicators. They don’t get lost in the details and they have some appreciation for where the listener is.
Think of your skills as dinner
There is no single element of dinner that by itself would be perfect. We like diversity and we like supporting pieces. We like presentation. We like novelty. We like familiarity and comparison. We like our surroundings to fit too. Every part contributes. Even the plates.
There is a local potter who made Canada’s state dinnerware. There are 45 of plates and it took over 300 tries to get that many right. They are quite spectacular and no doubt make dinner even better. Like dinner, your talent stack should be self-supporting and inter-dependent. Building it, unlike dinner, will be a lifetime work.

Margaret made this recently after our younger daughter made it for a birthday party. It is worth the considerable trouble to create. For me, not many deserts meet that standard. Be sure to notice the icing materials. 11.25 cups of icing sugar is not a misprint.
Very rich. Very tasty. And you only need a small serving. Just like talents.
