About Don Shaughnessy

I am interested in financial planning and products and processes related to that. I have found that many people go through the motions of financial planning without a clear understanding of the strategic purpose and tactical environment. These people underachieve.

My training and experience gained in public accounting, life insurance agency operations, and consulting services relating to retirement planning, estate planning, business transfer and succession questions helps me to provide guidance, products and full communication with other professionals.

My purpose is to develop, present and explain methods to achieve more income and larger capital values using tax advantaged structures, products and methods.

When not working with clients I like to use well developed written and presentation skills in the areas of seminars, keynote addresses, short articles and research documents.

I have developed and presented seminars and course material for a wide variety of organizations ranging from The CIBC to BDC and from the Ontario Federation of Agriculture to The Canadian Bar Association.

Teaching experience includes lecturing at a community college, various insurance industry professional development courses, and professional development courses for the Ontario Institute of Chartered Accountants.

I have participated in more than 50 television shows related to financial planning and have authored more than 4,000 articles on taxation, financial planning, business management, and insurance.

Primary interests: Personal estate structures, Optimized retirement income, business structure, business continuation planning, strategic planning, life and living benefits insurance.

Margaret and I have 4 children (all grown) and 6 grandchildren.

  1. Our paths are as different as apples and oranges, but I am interested in finance and have always dreamt of being ‘successful’. I’ve read a few of your posts and enjoyed their advice and tone. Any good tips, like yours, are always welcome. -cheers, bllu

    • Thank you for the kind words. I doubt our paths are so different. Live, love raise useful children. The rest is just stuff.

  2. Don, I have been reading your blog from time to time for the past two months. Suffice to say that I am truly enjoying your writing and the many nuggets of wisdom contained within. I admire both your intellect and your facility with language. While I might immodestly claim to have thoughts and ideas similar to yours, you have a wonderful ability to articulate your thinking in an entertaining, imaginative and useful way. I should be so gifted. Thank you for sharing.

    • Thank you for the kind comment Dale. I hope you are well and not wet in Calgary. Must have been more than an inconvenience. Best Don

  3. Hi Don , very honest and provocative views that get to the nub of many issues that the whole financial industry fails to acknowledge (or even be aware ?) Being retired you seem to be truely impartial but I suspect that you have always had a strong mind and I love your broader view of life and the financial challenges we all have today . PLease keep writing and sharing those thoughts ,
Shane , from a little town near Edinburgh .

    • Thanks Shane. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. It pleases me to think people actually read this stuff. Perhaps scientific methods get in the way or obscure things that are fundamentally not difficult. So far this has been no shortage of subjects and maybe that is the misfortune. Keep in touch. Best

  5. Love your financial wisdom Don. I enjoy reading your website, it keeps me reflecting and gives me a kind of joy. I like the way you merge financial advice with other important things in life such as helping a young kid how to read (which of course has financial repercussions both for the child and the parents). I think you are very interesting and have a lot of wisdom. Thank you for sharing.
